7 Things You Should Know About Your Money by Age 35

7 Things You Should Know About Your Money by Age 35 One of the scariest parts of adulting is being responsible for your money in other words, personal finance. With each decade comes new financial milestones, both big and small. But are you prepared to handle them?Regardless of where you started out in life financially, there are several money habits and pieces of info you should have a strong handle on as you enter your thirties. For starters, here are seven things you should know by the time you turn 35.1. Your current net worth.Knowing your net worth involves knowing both your assets and liabilitiesthat is, what you own and what you owe. Your debt shouldnt be a mystery to you neither should the amount in your savings account.Though it may not be exactly where youd like, having this number in mind ultimately gives you a big picture of your financial standing. In that regard, your net worth functions as a starting point for planning how to reach your big financial goals.2. The impo rtance of investing.Financial coach Karen Ford stresses understanding the importance of investing by the time you enter your mid-thirties. If you havent already started, the time to invest is now, whether thats in a 401k, Roth, traditional IRA, or something else.Planning and investing even a small percentage of your income with each paycheck can yield you great wealth and better prepare you for retirement, says Ford. The sooner you begin to invest even just $100 a month the better financial shape youll be in later on.3. How much you need for retirement. On top of understanding the value of investing, you should also know how much you need for retirement. Why? This figure will give you an idea of whether youre on track with your savings. Otherwise, youll be saving haphazardly, situation money aside with no real defined goal for financial security in your later years. To figure out how much you need, some experts advise aiming for saving 10 times your final salary. Of course, with une xpected job and career changes ahead, it may be difficult to calculate this figure. Thankfully, there are a number of online retirement calculators that you can conveniently plug your current and expected savings into. Or, for some human guidance, you can set up a consultation with a certified financial planner near you.4. What your leistungspunkt score is.Will Craig from LeaseFetcher advises knowing the ins and outs of credit scores what they are, how to influence yours, and of course, what your own score is.Credit scores are crucial, because theyre essentially a number assigned by lenders to reflect how risky it is to lend to you. This means your credit score plays a big part in your financial health and purchasing capabilities. As Craig says, Missing payments can negatively affect your credit rating, while paying back credit on time and in full can affect it positively. It can affect your chances of getting everything from a small loan to a mortgage.5. How to budget.Knowing how to create a budget is a must in your twenties and thirties. But of even mora importance is knowing how to create a realistic budget that actually works for you.Over time, your life situation will change and you may have to adjust your budget to fit your current situation, Alayna Pehrson from Best Company says. But having the right foundation is key.For obvious reasons, its easier to stick to a realistic budget instead of one based on wishful thinking. Not only that, but having a sound budget makes planning for larger financial goals, like kenntniserlangunging your childs college tuition and retirement, more feasible.6. What an emergency fund is.Research shows that the average American is ill prepared for unexpected events 57% report having less than $1,000 in savings. To prepare yourself for the unexpected, its best to build up what is known as an emergency fund a financial cushion equal to about three to six months of living expenses. Having an emergency fund means more financial s ecurity when the unexpected, like a car accident or sudden medical issue, comes up. Without one, youll be scrambling to pay these expenses, and may even find yourself in more debt than you started with.7. How compound interest works.By 35, compound interest should be your favorite financial term. Why? You can think of it essentially as free money. According to financial planner Lauren Zangardi Haynes, As your invested assets earn dividends and interest and you reinvest those dividends and interest payments, then your earnings will start to make money for you. Thanks to compound interest, you may be better off starting earlier and saving a smaller amount of money on a regular basis versus starting later and saving more money. This powerful tip means that any money invested in your twenties will already see substantial rewards by your thirties.--Joyce is a digital marketer and freelance writer who focuses on writing about personal finance on Financial Impulse. Why You Need to Embrace Employer Branding This Year

Why You Need to Embrace Employer Branding This YearWhy You Need to Embrace Employer Branding This YearSince the phrase employer branding welches popularized in the 1990s, companies have differentiated their workplaces for employees and job candidates by adapting techniques long used by marketers. The formation of the Great Place to Work Institute in the late 1990s and the subsequent launch of its annual Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For list in 1998 created an official platform by which the worlds largest companies could be measured. According to The Conference Board, the majority of large companies were aware of employer branding as a concept by the mid-2000s.Shift to the Candidate-Driven MarketSurveys show that employer branding is on nearly every companys list of intentions, if not practices. The growth of employer review sites and frequent media coverage of workplace strategies at companies such as Google have made job seekers more discerning. A survey by MRINetwork found th at 83 percent of recruiters said the market was candidate-driven versus employer-driven in the second half of 2014. In the second half of 2011 that number was 54 percent. This big shift over the last three years indicates the need for employers to do something different. Employer branding is one of the primary strategies for creating a positive brand impression and attracting more active and passive candidates. It has also been associated with lower cost of hire and lower turnover rates. In order to help you improve your efforts to attract quality candidates, Simply Hired is launching a new series of articles on strategies and tactics on employer branding over the coming months. To get started, lets look at what employer branding is and why its so important.Employer Branding is about RelationshipsBecause one of the goals of branding is to influence what people say about your company, it is necessarily based on relationships with current, past and potential employees as well as investo rs, press, vendors, suppliers and community leaders. Each of these parties gains an impression of your company through interactions and is likely to share this impression with others. According to the 2014 Edelman Trust Barometer, a person like yourself is 44 percent more likely to be a credible source of information about a company than its CEO. A regular employee is 21 percent more likely to be found credible than a CEO.Because people place more trust in their peers than talking heads, its no surprise that referrals are consistently reported as the No. 1 source of external hires in employer surveys. People are unlikely to refer a friend to an unhappy workplace, so creating a positive employer brand is paramount.Employer Branding is Internal and ExternalA well-designed careers website with compelling copy and testimonial videos will have a limited benefit if the actual employee experience does not match up. Candidates get impressions from the way recruiters, hiring manager and othe r interviewers behave. Companies ranked on national and local Top Places to Work lists get free publicity and validation for external messaging and are less likely to have trouble attracting candidates. Internal branding efforts have a strong influence on external perception, and should be leveraged accordinglyEmployer Brand and Company Brand Are DifferentThe way a company treats current and potential employees and talks about itself as a workplace is not going to be the same as the way it communicates its product and service offerings to potential customers. The goals are different. The employer brand should be articulated in a way that is consistent with employees actual experience. If employee research such as focus groups and surveys indicates that the experience is less than positive, then a positive brand can be developed and infused into the organization. The time and effort it takes to articulate a strong employer brand and maintain its consistency through both practice and communication will be well worth it.Employer Brand Extends To Social and Mobile A candidate-friendly mobile experience and an active social media presence contribute to a positive employer brand. Time spent with digital media has increased substantially over the past few years, and its only going to increase. A more interesting job posting, or an employer website that successfully loads on a smartphone, are expected. The constant trigger events offered in the social media stream give employers the opportunity to improve brand awareness through engagement.Branding is EverywhereEmployer branding made its way to the hauptrichtung about the same time as personal branding, with the 1998 release of the book Brand You by Tom Peters. Employer access to social media streams means that individuals need to pay more attention to the personal brand. A search on Amazon.com for personal branding delivers more than twice as many results as employer branding. Branding is now part of the culture, and an organization that expects candidates to clearly articulate who they are and what they are about should be able to do the same.In this series well move from general trends to specific case studies and tactics to help you create and maintain a strong employer brand in 2015. Stay tuned.

These are the five habits of highly likable people

These are the five habits of highly likable peopleThese are the five habits of highly likable peopleIt is the fear of most people at work When you wiggle yur way into a group at your office happy hour, the conversation immediately screeches to a halt. When you speak up in kollektiv meetings, your colleagues roll their eyes. You feel like you hear whispers every time you walk down the hallway. For whatever reason, youre hated at work. And, even further, youre convinced that its your no-good, backstabbing coworkers that are the problem. Why on earth wouldnt they like you? You think youre pretty great. How catty and childish (ahem, not to mention blind) are they?Brace yourself for a rude awakening The issue here could very well be you. When youre not well-liked in the office, its easy to point the finger at your coworkers. But, heres the brutal reality You play a large role in how youre perceived in the office - meaning its not all the fault of your landseemingly nasty and judgmental col leagues. We all have blind spots about ourselves, explains Kathi Elster, President of K Squared Enterprises, co-author of Mean Girls at Work, and co-host of My Crazy Office Podcast.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraWhen the behaviors are built in, its easy for us to see them as right. Habits slowly build from this repeated behavior, adds Jeanne Patti, acareer coach. If we ourselves dont see the habits forming or those around us dont call us out on them, these behaviors can become chronic and can negatively affect our character and how others view us.What does all of this mean for you? Well, the way that youre behaving in the office could be majorly turning your colleagues off - without you even realizing it. Heres how to turn it around and become more likable - not with tricks, but with honest self-assessment.How to examine your own behavior for flawsSo, what sorts of behaviors c ould you be exhibiting that are making your teammates cringe? Well, from constantly complaining to interrupting, your obnoxious actions could run the gamut. The most toxic behaviors I see in the workplace involve individuals who think that the only way for them to get a win is for other people to lose, explains Karlyn Borysenko, a principal ofZen Workplace, about something she sees crop up frequently. If they arent pushing other people down, they dont think they can get ahead.Office gossip is another terrible trap thats easy to fall into. As human beings, we like to understand why things are the way they are, and if we dont have a clear explanation for it, well come up with stories to explain it, adds Borysenko. Here are some other things you could be doing that are contributing to your least liked status in the office.Maintaining control at all costs Being the quintessential control freak might seem like a great way to take aktion and bring some much-needed organization to your team, but its sure to grate on your colleagues. These people want to make all the decisions, double-check everything, and nitpick all the small details, says Borysenko. Exhibiting this behavior might mean that youll even go so far as to provide direction to your peers - you act like the boss, even though youre not.Taking credit for others work This ones a no-brainer, right? But, youd be surprised by how easy it is to fall into this same trap yourself.Whether you provide a not-so-subtle reminder that the project was a team effort when your colleague is praised by your boss or you pass off an idea that your team member mentioned to you as your own, it can be tempting to ride on coattails or create your own spinoffs in order to shift the spotlight to yourself.Breeding negativity When your team member wants to change the way you do a certain report, you complain. When the office manager switches out the brand of coffee in the breakroom, you complain. The pessimist can build a pretty strong ca se why the change can hurt the status quo, says Patti. When projects dont meet their goals, these guardians prove themselves right, and the pessimistic behavior will build upon itself.Having all the answers Nobody likes a know-it-all. Not only is this behavior just plain obnoxious, but it can also lead to some pretty condescending treatment of your colleagues. When this person becomes stressed or unable to contribute in a way they see as valuable to help fix the problem, they can quickly judge others and see them as incompetent, Patti explains.Avoiding conflict Are you somebody who prefers to duck and cover as soon as conflicts arise or conversations get a little more heated? You might think that playing Switzerland is a surefire way to stay out of the mess altogether. But, avoiding unpleasantness at all costs - and leaving your coworkers to duke it out, even when you have a dog in the fight yourself - is actually equally as frustrating. How to build self-awarenessHeres the problem w e all run into Recognizing these behaviors in ourselves can be tough. After all, if you knew that something you were doing was royally pissing your coworkers off, you probably wouldve stopped doing that thing long ago, right?Needless to say, the first step to changing any behavior or habit is being able to identify it. So, in order to gain some more favor in the office (and stop those eye rolls that youve grown to dread), youre going to need to become a little more self-aware. Heres how.1. Take ownershipFirst up? Accepting the fact that you do indeed play a large role in the way that youre perceived in the office. Sorry, its not all the fault of your seemingly judgmental colleagues. If we acknowledge how our behaviors are being perceived by our coworkers, that means we need to place blame on ourselves, and most people simply dont want to do that, shares Borysenko. Its far easier to put ourselves in the role of a victim so that we dont have to accept that we probably could have approac hed things differently.2. Ask for feedbackRemember those blind spots you have about your own behavior? You might need to pull in some outside reinforcements to help you realize when youre acting like, well, a jerk. We all need to get direct feedback on what we are doing wrong, explains Elster.Whether you want to have an honest (and likely to be brutally frank) conversation with a coworker that you trust or plan to bring up the way that youre perceived in the office during a one-on-one with your supervisor, getting the insights - and help - of other people on your team can help to open your eyes to the way youre acting.3. Pay attention to your stress reactionsOn a good day, we can play nice with anyone, shares Patti, Yet, when were frustrated and under stress, our core traits come flying out. Most of us act out when we are stressed, which will contribute to bringing out our worst behaviors, adds Elster. We need to know what our stress reactions might be.Pay close attention to how yo ur attitude and behavior change when youre placed in a high pressure situation. For example, do you become extra pushy and controlling when youre working with a tight deadline?Anticipating that reaction will help you to more proactively manage it.4. Stop judgingWhen you realize that youve been acting like a straight-up jerk in the office, its human nature to start beating yourself up. But, resist the temptation to drag yourself over the coals.Stop judging things as good or bad - your behaviors or other peoples, warns Borysenko. The minute we see something as bad we try to fight against it, but thats usually just not productive. Anytime you find yourself judging, take a step back, breathe, consider your goals, and look for the best way to bring others along to achieve them.5. Frequently step back and examine your own roleNo one sets out to behave in bad ways we all try to work in ways that are comfortable for us. So, unless youre a psychopath (they do well at work) theres a good cha nce that the behaviors that you assume to be harmless could be the very things that are pushing your coworkers away.Be aware of these common toxic behaviors and implement these tips to become more aware of your own actions, and youre much more likely to tackle the important task of turning your reputation around.Remember that you often get back the reactions you put out there if youre doing a lot of eye-rolling yourself, youre more likely to get eye-rolls from others in return. If youre complaining a lot, people are complaining about you.Above all Be authentic. Putting on an act to seem like a different person takes a lot of energy, wont make you feel better and most of your colleagues are likely to see right through it anyway. Most of the time, unless were Oscar-nominated actors, were not fooling anyone by pretending. Be sincere in your words and actions, and treat people with the respect they deserve. You can be the smartest person in the room, but if no one likes you or no one wan ts to work with you, your reputation is going to be hurt, concludes Elster. Behavior matters. This article was first published on May 18, 2017.You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people
